12:30 - Left my place and started wandering. I had an idea of where I wanted to go and what I wanted to shoot to start and I figured from there I'd just see what happened. Took several shots close to my apartment then started to fan out from there.
1:00 - Found several new places to shoot south-east near the industrial area. Starting to play with my cameras settings a lot more and finding interesting things out about how much it does/doesn't suck.
1:30 - TROUBLE! So I'm taking photos outside of Metro Hall... which to me seemed like nothing. Anyway this is where Urban Tetris and CN Glower come in. I was interrupted during the CN Glower shot and it didn't come out at ALL what I wanted. It was security. Apparently you're not allowed to photograph things anywhere in public according to them. Here is a quick... from what I remember of course... overview of the conversation.
Security - "Are you taking pictures?"
Me - "Yeah"
Security - "You can't take pictures here, this is public property and there's no photography allowed."
Me - "Oh? I don't see any 'no photography' signs around. I'm just taking pictures for artistic merit."
Security - annoyed now - "Sir I'm going to have to take your camera."
Me - snide - "Excuse me? Are you the police?"
Security - "I don't need to be."
Me - snide... even more so - "Actually yes to take my camera you DO need to be police otherwise it's considered theft. I'm on PUBLIC property therefore I'm not trespassing on or taking photos of PRIVATE property."
Security - unsure - "Well..."
Me - "Why don't you go call the police then if you want my camera."
Security - "I don't think we need to go that far... just give me the camera please."
Me - "How about I just walk this way and you let me because if you touch me I'll charge you."
Security - "!@#% off you little punk!"
Me - leaves
Yeah pretty bullshit eh? I managed to keep my cool so it worked in my favour. He followed me for a bit trying to get me to do something but I just left and he gave up. It seems weird that you can get in so much heat for trying to take a couple pictures. ANYWAY!
2:30 - Headed down to the waterfront and tried to find a big boat to take a photo of but of COURSE the only day I come down here finally there's nothing. I wanted to get one of those huge tankers that comes in to the factories down there.
3:30 - Heading towards the center of downtown now and snapping a few shots here and there. I'm quite pleased with what I've gotten so far and glad that I walked all this way. I went to a lot of places that I've never even seen before and saw a lot of things I didn't even know existed in the downtown area.
4:30 - Arrive at my destination for the day. Take a final couple shots on the way here and then call it a day.
STATS:
Shots taken: 88
Net Photos (deviations): 21
Lessons Learned: 1 - screw with security if you get the chance.
I feel REALLY good after today. I never realized how much I missed going out like this with no huge goals. Just wander and take pictures. I scoped out some destinations for the next P.A. and I can't wait. I'm also working on some night shots in the near future that should be quite interesting.
